Compare quartz field watches by size and crystal
These three selected configurations use VH31 sweep-second quartz movements without a date display and have sapphire crystals. Compare the complete case footprint and strap attachment before choosing; the same movement does not make the watches fit alike.

Choose dimensions and configuration together
The ML07 has the shortest listed lug-to-lug length and the lowest selected price here. Its K1 mineral-glass versions are separate options. The WD1960S V2 adds an intermediate 36.5mm case and a steel bracelet; its unavailable K1 options should not be confused with the selected sapphire version. The WD1980 has the largest diameter but the lowest listed height of these three, with a nylon strap and rotating bezel.
For a calendar, the WD1980 also has separate Ronda 517 day-date configurations; the selected Black Case / No Date option above is VH31. Read our VH31 movement guide for sweep-second operation and ownership details. Compare these listing measurements with a watch you already wear; they are not a universal wrist-fit guarantee.
Field Watches Buying Guide
Field watches are designed around legibility, practical sizing and straightforward functionality. Their military roots traditionally favor clear Arabic numerals, high-contrast dials and durable cases, making the style well suited to everyday wear as well as outdoor use.
At Watchdives, our field and military watch collection includes compact quartz and automatic models from Watchdives, Militado, Thorn and other specialist watch brands. You can find sizes from approximately 36mm to 40mm, including VH31 sweeping quartz models, mechanical field watches and military-inspired designs with sapphire crystal and strong lume.
Field Watch vs. Military Watch
The terms field watch and military watch are often used together, but they are not exactly the same. A field watch usually refers to the practical design language that developed from military wristwatches: simple dials, easy-to-read numerals, restrained case sizes and reliable movements. A military-style watch can cover a broader range of designs inspired by service watches, pilot watches and other historical military timepieces.
For most buyers, the important factors are readability, wrist size, movement type and durability rather than the label itself.
Quartz vs. Automatic Field Watches
Quartz field watches are a strong choice if accuracy, low maintenance and grab-and-go convenience matter most. VH31-powered watches are especially popular because the seconds hand moves several times per second, giving them a smoother appearance than a conventional quartz watch.
Automatic field watches use a mechanical movement powered by wrist motion. They require more adjustment than quartz watches, but many enthusiasts prefer their mechanical character and traditional watchmaking experience.
What Size Field Watch Should You Choose?
Traditional field watches are often relatively compact. A 36mm or 37mm case can work particularly well on smaller wrists or for buyers who prefer vintage military proportions. Around 38mm is a versatile middle ground, while 39mm–40mm models provide more wrist presence without becoming excessively large.
Case diameter is only one factor. Lug-to-lug length, thickness and strap width can make two watches with the same stated diameter wear very differently.
Affordable Field Watches Under $100
A good field watch does not need to be expensive. Many affordable models now offer sapphire crystal, reliable quartz or automatic movements, strong nighttime legibility and practical case dimensions for well under $100.
